When my husband and I moved to SaddleBrooke Ranch, I was interested in learning about Arizona and the surrounding area. One of my first stops was at the Western National Parks Association in Oro Valley. It was there that I became involved with their book club, which focuses on books written about the southwest or are by authors from the southwest. The insight and knowledge from these readings have given me a better understanding of my home, the desert with its flora and fauna, native peoples, cultural and geological history, and so much more.
Meetings are held monthly and are open to everyone. Members take turns leading a discussion. Some of the books we’ve read include Isabella Greenway—an Enterprising Woman (Kristie Miller), Blood & Thunder (Hampton Sides), Lazy B (Sandra Day O’Connor; Skinwalkers (Tony Hillerman), and The Desert Smells Like Rain (Gary Paul Nabhan).
Our selections the next few months are DeGrazie: The Man and the Myths (James Johnson) on Oct. 20; News of the World (Paulette Jiles) on Nov. 17 and A Stranger at My Door (Peg Bowden) on Dec. 15.
