Easter program at Mountain Shadows Presbyterian Church

Nan Nasser

In the Christian religion Easter is a time to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead as described in the New Testament. The 40 days preceding Easter Sunday are known as Lent, a period of fasting, prayer and penance. Palm Sunday is the week prior to Easter, when people gladly welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem, Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper that Jesus had with his disciples, and Good Friday honors the crucifixion and death of Jesus. Through that death Jesus paid the penalty for sin, thus providing for all who believe in him eternal life in Christ Jesus.

Mountain Shadows Presbyterian Church will have a special Palm Sunday service on March 20, at 10:00 a.m. with a musical procession into the sanctuary, the waving of ecologically friendly, sustainably harvested palms and the welcoming of new members.

Maundy Thursday on March 24 will begin at 5:00 p.m. with a reflective service in remembrance of Jesus’ last night with his disciples. A simple soup supper will complete the service beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Easter Sunday, March 27, will begin with an 8:00 a.m. service on the church patio and will also have a 10:00 a.m. celebratory worship service with special guest musicians.

Additional opportunities to learn about this special season will include a three-part Lenten Learning Class on Wednesdays, March 2, 9, 16 from 2:00-3:30 p.m. Pastor Rachel Srubas will help us look at Jesus’ suffering, death and resurrection as the enduring mystery of how God brings life out of death.
