Let the games begin!

Rick Dahlin, Co-Chair

The men of Unit 8a held their first ever golf scramble on April 4. Sixteen men participated in the inaugural event. Teams were selected by taking the four lowest handicapped players in our unit who then captained each team. Everyone else was assigned teams by using a blind draw. To even out the field each player was required to use three of their drives. Also, no player could hit consecutive shots through the green. We also had two skill challenges with holes graciously sponsored by co-chair Bob Arthur and Karl Knight. Hole 14 was closest to the pin and was won by Richard Osterlund. Hole 9 was closest to the barber pole in the center of the fairway and was won by Marvin Soskil. Magnificent shots by these gentlemen!

The winning team was comprised of Guy Shelton, Tim Dickinson, Larry Burchfield and Rick Dahlin who all “scrambled” to a score of 67. Second place with a score of 69 was John Whitehead, Roy Thompson, Rick Weiland and Marvin Soskil.

After the match the teams, with all the Unit 8a residents, met in The La Vista Room at the Hacienda Clubhouse for the trophy presentation. It helped that it happened to be Happy Hour, so food and beverage was available and well consumed!

After the presentations it was obvious that this group was not going to give the winning team bragging rights for a whole year. Talks are underway to play this event more often than annually. The trophy was purposely engraved as “traveling” so it can be passed on to the next winning team. The winners this year are trying to decide who is going to proudly share and display the trophy first in their home! Hey, it could be a great conversation piece at a cocktail party. Who knows…oh well!

A special thanks to golf pro Ken Steinke for helping us with the tournament!
