Nineteen riders enjoy a trail ride in Gold Canyon

Don and Rebecca Williams

A fine group of 19 riders from the SaddleBrooke Ranch Riding Group headed up the trail for a great trail ride at Donnelly’s D-Spur Ranch in Gold Canyon. The one-hour trail winds through the foothills of the Superstition Mountains which were especially colorful in the warm morning sun. It was great to enjoy the sunshine in the somewhat warmer climate at the eastern edge of Phoenix. Along the trail the group enjoyed some fine views of Phoenix to the west and talking to the head wrangler. They asked if the wrangler had another job and he admitted he “robbed railroad trains” as his second job! He confessed he is part of the group of bandits that rob the Grand Canyon train every day at 5:00 p.m. as it travels between Williams and the Grand Canyon. The tourists have a lot of fun with their antics.

The group included six who were new to the group enjoying their first trail ride in many a year. New renters Tony and Margaret Buszynski enjoyed the trail with their friend, Mary Spyros, who has lived at the Ranch for many years, but had not been out trail riding until now. Lynn Wescott and Marv and Karen Yakos, were others out with the group for the first time.

On Saturday, March 10, the group will head to the Rocking K Ranch near Vail. This will be a newer location to many in the group. The property runs along the Eastern Saguaro National Park. The ride will start at 10:30 a.m., with a second group going at 12:30 if needed. This is a substitute for the Colossal Cave Mountain Park stables that are changing operators. The group hopes to be able to go there later in the spring.

There is no obligation to attend all the rides offered. Riders simply let the secretary know if they want to attend a particular ride. Car pools are generally arranged for those interested.
