Ranchers rally for a cure

Sue Cook

October is sure to be an exciting month with so many SaddleBrooke Ranch clubs and organizations working together to promote early cancer detection and prevention! What started off as a campaign to Pink Out the Ranch, turned into a month of fun activities.

The kick-off event, Serve for the Cure, is being hosted by the SaddleBrooke Ranch Tennis Association. Stop by the courts and cheer on the players who have made a donation to the American Cancer Society in lieu of paying a registration fee.

On October 2, join neighbors for a fun Happy Hour at the Ranch House patio. There will be pink specialty drinks and pink appetizers to be enjoyed. Bring your checkbook and bid on one of the great items donated, like a gourmet meal for six; wine and appetizer pairing for four; wine tasting for eight; tennis lessons, and more!

All checks should be made out to the American Cancer Society.

The men’s and women’s golf groups will be promoting Skin Cancer awareness and prevention as members play golf in October. Their theme is Golfers have Skin in the Game! Tentative date for the men’s event is Thursday, October 4 and the women’s tentative date is October 29. SBR Ranchette Putters will be promoting cancer awareness and prevention at one of their October events too.

The Women’s Club is addressing cancer awareness at their October 14 meeting in multiple ways. Their decorations will be “pink out” familiar ribbons and part of their program will address skin cancer. They will be honoring one of their former presidents, Martha Sampson, who died of cancer this year.

Crafters on the Ranch have found ways to join the campaign as well! Ranch Piecemakers will be delivering a bounty of quilts to the University of Arizona Cancer Center to be given to patients receiving treatment. We Be Beaders are busy making items to sell with 100% of the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society! Keep an eye out for their beautiful craft.

Join the SBR Mudslingers to learn techniques of hand-built pottery while supporting the American Cancer Society. Stay tuned for details!

Ranch residents are also participating in Making Strides against Breast Cancer walk in Tucson on October 20 and the Cancer Support group is sponsoring Light the Night in Tucson on October 26. Contact Sandy Jessop at [email protected] for more information.
