For the last five months Ranch residents with basic to intermediate photography experience have been meeting at La Hacienda Club’s La Mesa Room. The meetings included some technical presentations and some digital display of photos taken by the residents.

Technical presentations have included such subjects as the rule of thirds, exposure triangle, basic night-time photography, shutter and aperture priority and fill flash. In other words we learned how to use or better use a camera. We also viewed pictures taken by the residents of various aspects of La Hacienda Club. Since the group meetings are relaxed we all have been able to have fun discussing what we have learned and comparing everyone’s varying experiences and interests in photography.

Steve Weiss, a three-year SBR resident and photographer, initiated the group and has been serving as the group’s mentor. Steve’s background includes nine years working as a photographer covering weddings, sports events, portraits, news and real estate. He said that the reason for organizing the group meetings and sharing his experiences is to understand the experiences of others who have photographed landscapes and flowers.

At the first meeting Steve conducted a survey of participants to create a guide for setting up future meetings. The survey showed that the five largest areas of interest were editing, travel, landscape, portraits and how to better use their equipment. Other areas of interest were macro photography, sunsets, telling a story, abstracts, animals, real estate and architecture. There clearly is a broad range of interests.

This photo group is for all SaddleBrooke Ranch residents of all experience levels. We have meetings every two months or so. There is no fee, and any interested SBR resident may join the group. If you or others you know enjoy photography and have an interest in joining, please contact Steve Weiss at [email protected] or just show up at the next meeting on Friday, August 5, at 9:30 a.m. At this meeting, which corresponds to the end of the Arizona Monsoon, we will look at pictures taken by residents of the flowers appearing on the Ranch.
