Self-Guided Car Tours of Tucson

Kim Schweitzer

During the hottest days of summer, my husband Larry and I have taken a couple of cool car rides to visit some interesting and eclectic Tucson neighborhoods that were mentioned in Tucson Lifestyle Magazine.

We visited Barrio Hollywood, an easy 45-minute drive from the Ranch. The interesting architecture, restaurants, and neighborhood signs featuring former residents lends to the neighborhood vibe.

We visited a neighborhood institution, Pat’s Chili Dogs, which has been in the same location for over 40 years. The food was great and the building looked like we were stepping back into an earlier era. Barrio Hollywood is bounded by the Santa Cruz River and Silverbell Road, Speedway and St. Mary’s Road.

Another interesting neighborhood is Dunbar Spring. The tree lined streets feature Victorian, Craftsman, and Bungalow style homes built as early as the 1920s. There is community art in the form of painted murals, metal totem poles, creative signs, and even a bicycle atop a house. Dunbar Spring is bounded by 6th Street, Main Avenue, Stone Avenue, and Speedway Blvd.

Tucson is a wonderful town to explore, with rich history, culture, and diversity.

Murals are an important part of Tucson art and heritage. Driving around to view the murals is a great way to learn about Tucson. Here is a link complete with addresses, showing murals in the Tucson area: shorturl.at/hpwX1.
