Sew what?

Linda Shannon-Hills

Sew what? We ask this question a lot in our group as we continue to make different items for ourselves, friends, family and charities. This group is designed to teach basic sewing skills, hold instructional sessions on non-clothing sewing projects for yourself, friends or grandchildren such as pillow cases, tote bags, mesh bags, wine bottle bags, Christmas gifts and decor, table runners, notebook covers and much more.

We made over 50 ditty-bags to take to Youth on Their Own. The bags can be used to put personal items in to keep safe. In February, we will make Fidget Quilts or Comfort Pads for patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia. If you would like to apply to have a Fidget Quilt made for your family member or friend, contact Linda Shannon-Hills at [email protected].

If you have not sewn since junior high Home Economics but would like to see what you can create, join the Sew What group. We meet on Monday mornings from 9:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and again on Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in the Sewing and Quilting Room (NeedleArts) located in the new Creative Arts and Technology Center. Some days we have classes taught by volunteers in the group while other days, you can come in with your projects to use the various sewing machines available for several Needle Arts groups, get assistance with your project or enjoy time with others in the room.

Membership is $20 per year and $10 to have sewing machine orientation and training. Once you have qualified to be a monitor, you can come into the room to use the machines and supplies during open times.

To join, send an email to Linda Shannon-Hills at [email protected] or go to Groupworks, ask to join Sew What.
