Spotlight On Advertiser: First implantable contact lens surgery is a success

 

On Thursday, November 1, Shaylee Thar from Chandler, Arizona was the successful recipient of the first Visian Toric Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) in the Southwest. The surgery was performed by Dr. Scott Perkins, Founding Partner of Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center.

The procedure provides a new solution for patients with moderate to high levels of myopia and astigmatism in one simple procedure following FDA approval of STAAR Surgical’s Visian Toric ICL. Only a few procedures have been performed in the United States after a recent FDA approval of the treatment.

“This has changed my life,” said Shaylee. Immediately after the procedure, she was able to read the clock in the operating room. “She sat up after the second eye and even cried a little bit which makes us a little teary eyed, too,” said Dr. Perkins.

Commenting on the success of the procedure, Dr. Perkins said, “It was great. It was very straightforward having the same techniques that I use for putting in ICL’s over the past, almost 20 years. I knew exactly what to do.”

The Visian Toric ICL is an additive technology in which a lens is placed behind the iris and in front of the eye’s crystalline lens to correct vision. This method works with the eye to not only restore clear and sharp vision, (1, 2, 3) but also provide UV protection and excellent night vision (4).

The Visian Toric ICL eliminates multiple surgical procedures by correcting astigmatism and myopia simultaneously (5). In a procedure that takes less than 30 minutes, Visian Toric ICL lets doctors treat more patients with astigmatism and myopia while preserving the corneal structure of the eye.

FDA approval was based on results from the Visian Toric ICL clinical study which reported 98.4% of patients would have the Visian Toric ICL surgery again (6). Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center took part in the clinical study.
