The Catalina Mountains Satellite Chapter (CMSC) of the Tucson Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) Chapter is on summer hiatus and will not meet again until October. Nonetheless, CMSC has already confirmed an array of civilian and military speakers for this coming fall and winter. CMSC currently has 43 regular members and two surviving spouse members.
Over the summer, CMSC, in concert with its parent Tucson MOAA Chapter, has continued its community involvement. CMSC has been represented at the annual SaddleBrooke Recreation and Activities Fair, at local activities to support the Missing in America Program (MIAP), and Wreaths Across America (WAA) honor ceremonies at the Marana, Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery. We also help support scholarships for local Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) and Junior ROTC programs.
One of the most important of these community activities is supporting the charity Esperanza En Escalante (EEE). As stated on EEE’s website, “on any given day, 50,000 veterans are homeless and living on the streets. The mission of Esperanza En Escalante is to provide transitional and permanent supportive housing for homeless veterans and veterans’ families, as well as to offer social rehabilitation in order to nurture and support the transition from homelessness to self-sufficiency.” During this downtime, we continue to provide donations of household goods and small appliances, as well as quarterly donations to purchase food for EEE’s food pantry.
If you are interested in becoming a member of the CMSC of Tucson MOAA, contact Membership Chair Lt. (j.g.) David Bull at [email protected] or 520-825-0604.
Until January, 2003, MOAA was known as The Retired Officers Association (TROA), which was established in 1929 in Los Angeles. TROA moved its headquarters to Washington, D.C., in 1944, to better represent the interests of its members. Today, MOAA has grown to more than 350,000 members and is the country’s largest military officers’ association.
MOAA is a nonprofit association dedicated to maintaining a strong national defense and preserving the earned entitlements of members of the uniformed services and their families and survivors.
The Catalina Mountains Satellite Chapter encompasses Northwest Tucson, including Catalina, Oracle, parts of Oro Valley and Marana, SaddleBrooke, SaddleBrooke Ranch, and Sun City. For additional MOAA information, contact Col. Bill Nagy at [email protected] or our website, www.tucsonmoaa.com.
