SaddleBrooke’s own community theatre group, The PrimeTime Players, is looking for talented, energetic and creative actors for our upcoming spring 2016 play Calendar Girls, written by Tim Firth and based on the 2003 blockbuster film starring Helen Mirren. The play tells the true story of a group of women in England whose simple Women’s club project turned into something much more than anyone could have imagined.
When Annie’s husband John dies of leukemia, she and best friend, Chris, resolve to raise money for a new settee in the local hospital waiting room. They manage to persuade four fellow club members to pose nude with them for an “alternative” calendar. The news of the women’s charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and hordes of press soon descend on the small village of Knapeley in the Yorkshire Dales. The calendar is a success, but Chris and Annie’s friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame. Calendar Girls has become the fastest selling play in British theatre history. From calendars, the movie and the play and beyond, millions of dollars have been raised for Leukemia/Lymphoma research in the years since the calendar was first created.
But nude women on stage in SaddleBrooke? No one need worry. Just as in the actual calendar and the film, real nudity will not be displayed in any way that is offending. The playwright says, “As in the best tradition of vaudevillian fan dances, the art of the play’s nudity lies in what is withheld, which we call “fabulous concealment”!
Calendar Girls requires eight women and four to five men. Character acting is our priority! Memorization is required. There will be no double casting.
