In July, instructor Mary Gavan held a class teaching the art of creating beautiful silk scarves. Everyone who took that class went home with two incredible, personal scarves. By popular demand, Mary is returning in time to teach another class for the holidays.
This class will focus on velvet scarves and will be just in time for the holidays. Mary will teach two new techniques. One is called Japanese resist dyeing. The other technique is dye painting on cut velvet. Students will create two velvet scarves in two different sizes and styles. Make one for yourself and give one away for the holidays (or keep both!). What a unique opportunity to learn a new art medium, plus make a gorgeous, personal item to wear. Your friends will be jealous!
Mary Gavan is a Tucson artist known for her fiber arts and painted scarves. She has received accolades from “Shout Out Arizona.” Mary has been teaching yarn dying and painted scarves for several years.
Class description: Students will learn to dye two rayon, silk, velvet scarves, which will add a pop of color to your wardrobe. You will learn Japanese resist techniques on a solid velvet scarf and painting with dye on a cut velvet scarf. Students will also dye two silk gift bags with ties. Fiber-reactive dyes are light-fast and color-fast, ensuring many years of wearing enjoyment. Dyeing luxurious velvet is magic! Join Mary for a fun afternoon.

Payment deadline date: Wednesday, Oct. 25 (Mary needs time to order materials)
Materials the instructor will provide: One rayon, silk, solid velvet scarf (11” x 60”) with fringe. One rayon, silk cut velvet scarf (8” x 54”) with fringe. Two dyeable silk gift bags. All materials required, including apron (2), gloves (2), premixed fiber-reactive dyes, soda ash mordant, fabric rinse, Sumi brush, rubber bands, and miscellaneous binding tools.
Materials participants are to bring: Aprons provided, but wear casual clothes.
Registration: Go to GroupWorks. Click on “Events.” Click on “I’m Going.” Confirmation is depositing your check in the lockbox outside the Art Room door. Please deposit your check quickly as classes fill up. Please do not click “I’m Going” unless you intend to take the class.
