Joe Giammarino and Dominic Borland
On September 12, 2015 the Ranch Billiards Club hosted its first 8-Ball Tournament held at SaddleBrooke Ranch and run by tournament directors Dominic Borland and Joe Giammarino. There were 22 competitors (wow!). SaddleBrooke participants were Dominic “The Doctor” Borland, Joe “Fast Eddie” Giammarino, Jim “Aviator” Wydick, Tom “Half Jacket” Barrett, Richard “Villa Park” Werkmeister, Don “Deadeye” Cox, Don “California Kid” Fowler, Fred Dianda, Vance MacLeod, Jim “Shooter” Fabio, Ron “Q” Quarantino, Paul “Bankster” Callas, Tom “Ski” Kaliski, Dan Stebbins, and from the Ranch the participants were Harley Schlachter, Jim Kauffman, Tom “Teck” Sorensen, and Cliff “Lucky Shirt” Terry, Mike Matreyek, Larry Jacox, Ted Falkner, and Larry Tipton.
A big thank you goes out to all the participants and especially The Ranch Billiards Club officers Cliff Terry, Tom Sorensen, and Jim Kauffman for their encouragement and invitation to use their facility. It’s a comfortable and beautiful place to hold an 8-Ball tournament. Let us not forget the gracious ladies from the Bistro Viente Restaurant for their fine service and the delicious sausage sandwiches. Special mention goes out to the sometimes loud supportive fans of the Ranch’s players; you made the day fun for all.
The day started with a players meeting held at 12:45 p.m. to explain the tournament format and rules. The tourney was a single game double elimination format. Tournament started at 1:00 p.m.
Final results: first place Joe Giammarino, second place Dominic Borland, third place Don Cox.
Tournament Recap
Joe Giammarino’s first place was accomplished by first beating Jim Kauffman, then outlasting Vance MacLeod, Joe then disposed of Paul Callas and then he put Jim Fabio down. Dominic Borland was next to lose to Joe which sent Dominic to the loser’s bracket. Dominic came out of the loser’s bracket to meet Joe again. Dominic would have to beat Joe twice to win the tourney. Dominic won their first match which set up one final game for the championship. Joe won the right to break. Dominic racked the balls, sat down and never got out of his chair, again. Joe broke and ran the table for the championship. Congrats Joe!
Thank you to our five sponsors. Congrats to the winners. Tom Sorensen won a cue stick case from Terry Johnson of Apollo Pools, Inc.
