Phyllis Ketring, Health Fair Planning Committee
The annual SaddleBrooke Health Fair is the largest exhibition of health-related services in our community. It offers residents a convenient venue for many routine medical tasks such as immunizations and screenings. The Fair will be held at the SaddleBrooke One clubhouse Saturday, October 17, 9:00 a.m. to noon. Parking will be available at the MountainView Clubhouse with shuttle service to SaddleBrooke One.
Recycle eyeglasses and dispose of medications
Start your day at the fair by disposing of old eyeglasses and unused medications. Please do not bring containers, liquids or needles.
Flu, pneumonia and shingles vaccines
In addition to the traditional flu shot, both Walgreens and HealthWaves will offer the new high-dose shot and quadrivalent flu shots. The high dose provides greater protection for the same flu strains while the quadrivalent covers four strains of flu. Pneumonia vaccines will be available. If you have already had the pneumonia shot, Walgreens offers the Prevnar 13® booster vaccine for additional protection. Ask your physician if you have questions about what is right for you.
Walgreens will also have the shingles vaccine by appointment. Arrangements for this shot must be made in advance. Call Walgreens at 520-339-2985.
Diagnostic lab and allergy testing
Healthwaves conducts lab tests at a reasonable price without a prescription. SaddleBrooke residents will receive detailed information on these paid diagnostic and allergy tests by e-mail right before the fair. Detailed information about the lab tests will also be posted at www.sbseniors.org.
University of Arizona (now Banner) Medical Center
The College of Pharmacy will do free screenings for blood sugar, cholesterol and more. This dedicated team of interns and technicians from the pharmaceutical college is willing to discuss medication interaction and common side effects. They will be located on the first floor of the clubhouse in the Agave Lounge behind the bar.
UA (now Banner Health) will also do free audiology testing in the Arts and Crafts Center next to the clubhouse. If you want a hearing test, there will be a sign-up sheet near the clubhouse entrance. The sign-up sheet should reduce the lines for this popular screening.
Other representatives from the University of Arizona Medical Center will also be present. Please note the new name is Banner Health since Phoenix-based Banner Health acquired the University of Arizona Health Network on March 1.
Free screening for skin cancer
Sheftel Healthy Skin Dermatology, underwriter of the Health Fair, will be back with free screenings for potential skin cancer, always a high risk in the harsh desert sun. Many fairgoers over the years have discovered an issue during this free exam that required follow-up treatment. Sheftel will be on the lower level of the clubhouse.
Oro Valley Hospital
Oro Valley Hospital will sponsor short outdoor seminars on the lawn for the first time.
8:15 am – Kim Tucker, MD, Orthopedic Surgery, Joint Pain Management
Please note: this session begins before the fair opens and before the first shuttle runs. People attending this first session may park at HOA1.
9:45 am – Leila Wing, MD, Endocrinologist, Diabetes and Thyroid
10:15 am – A. Beth Martin, MD, General Surgeon, Surgery Options
More Oro Valley
Other physicians and medical practitioners from Oro Valley will be located on the first floor of the clubhouse behind the fireplace.
Free Vision Screening
Extensive eye health examinations will be conducted on the lower level of the clubhouse.
Specialties at Fair
The range of specialties this year includes various aspects of aging, alcohol addiction, assisted living, audiology, cancer/oncology, cardiology, chiropractic, cosmetic surgery, dental, dermatology, fitness, gastroenterology, home health care, hospice, hypertension, long-term care, massage, medical equipment, medication management and conflict, nutrition, orthopedic, pain management, Parkinson’s, physical therapy, radiology, senior services, urology, and vision.
Giveaways Galore
Walgreens is giving tote bags to the first 1,000 people at the fair. While giveaways are certainly not the most important reason to attend, they are a motivating reward. You may collect bags, candy, notepads, pens and pencils all compliments of the exhibitors.
Dave’s Diner and Roadrunner Grill
Dave’s Diner will be right outside the entrance with quick snacks for hungry fairgoers.
The Roadrunner Grill is also open before, during and after the fair. The shuttles continue until 1:00 p.m. to allow attendees time for lunch.
Watch for updates and details on the extensive list of paid diagnostic tests at www.sbseniors.org.
The Health Fair offers SaddleBrooke residents a convenient location for annual flu shots, pneumonia and shingles vaccines as well as an excellent time to learn more about the local medical and health community.
