The Art of Not Caring

Suzanne Marlatt Stewart

There’s a common belief that to be happy, you must constantly strive for more wealth, more status, and more possessions. At face value, it seems logical. More equals better, right?

However, the truth is, as we age happiness isn’t about attaining more; it’s about caring less–less about external validation, societal expectations, and material gain. It’s about learning to discern what truly matters.

Recognize the power of your choices. Every day, you have the potential to make choices that line up with your authentic values. The art of not caring is rooted in this very principle. It’s about letting go of external expectations and embracing the freedom to live on your own terms.

You are not defined by what others think of you, it is none of your business. So, detach yourself from external pressures. Choose authenticity over conformity. Start living a life that is genuinely yours. It’s never too late.

Embrace the beauty of imperfection. We live in a world that demands excellence. There’s this constant pressure to be the best, to never make mistakes, to always put our best foot forward.

But perfection is an illusion. It’s an unattainable standard that no one can reach. And in the pursuit of this illusion, we often lose sight of our authentic selves.

In the wise words of Leonard Cohen, “There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” Embrace your imperfections—they are not signs of weakness, but symbols of your humanity and authenticity.

Confront your fears and limitations. Living genuinely and not caring about external expectations can be frightening. We’re conditioned to fit in, to play safe, to avoid standing out. When we decide to break free from this mold, we’re often met with our deepest fears and self-imposed limitations. Ask yourself: what fears and limitations are holding you back from living your truth?

Cultivate compassion for yourself. The key to progress isn’t self-criticism, it’s self-compassion. It’s about understanding and accepting your shortcomings, acknowledging your mistakes without judgment, and treating yourself with kindness.

I think it can be helpful to strike a balance between the current moment and the big picture. It’s important to acknowledge our present experience. What can also be helpful is to remember that, at the end of the day, we are continuously doing the best we can with what we know at each moment.

The art of not caring can look different for each of us. Some can find this peace of mind by being out in nature; maybe it’s doing activities you really enjoy, and some may even find it by just meditation or being in silence. Regardless of how you choose, remember, everything begins in your mind.

Your individual journey involves recognizing the power of your choices, embracing your imperfections, cultivating compassion for yourself and others, and aligning your actions with your values.
