The Saddlebrooke Ranch Library Committee has announced the three books for the Read America 250 Program.
The program, which celebrates the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, will start with the book “Declaration: The Nine Tumultuous Weeks When America Became Independent, May 1 – July 4, 1776,” by William Hogeland. Hogeland’s book will be discussed in the La Vista Room of the Hacienda Club on Wednesday, Feb. 18, from 4 to 6 p.m. All residents are invited to attend!
The book that follows will be “George Washington’s Secret Six: The Spy Ring that Saved the American Revolution,” by Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger. Knowing that he could not defeat the British through military might, George Washington developed a sophisticated intelligence network known as The Culper Spy Ring to gather information on the British and their military plans. Authors Kilmeade and Yaeger provide portraits of these amazing patriots and the struggles they endured. This book will be discussed on Wednesday, April 15, also from 4 to 6 p.m. in the La Vista Room at the Hacienda Club.
The final book, “First Family: Abigail and John Adams,” written by Pulitzer Prize Winner Joseph J. Ellis, will be discussed on June 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the La Vista Room at the Hacienda Club. First Family delves into the intimate relationship between Abigail and John Adams through their personal correspondence of over 1,200 letters. The letters cover their support of the quest for independence, his time in France, and through the years of his presidency. As the first Vice President of the United States, the second President, and the father of the sixth President of the United States, John and Abigail Adams are special participants in the birth and success of the American Experiment.
Attendees to the discussions will each receive a raffle ticket for a chance to receive the book “The American Revolution: An Intimate History,” by Geoffrey C. Ward and Ken Burns, the companion book to the PBS documentary, “The American Revolution.” You will receive one ticket for each discussion group you attend.
Join the Library Committee and fellow residents in reading and examining these exciting books pertaining to the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
