When you join us on Oct. 27 for our October Travel Talk Tuesday presentation. SaddleBrooke Ranch (SBR) resident Ben Eisenstein will take us along on his incredible journey to Kenya and Tanzania.

Ben and his wife Nancy are avid travelers, and Ben also has a special interest in music, nature, and technology. Ben is the current president of the SBR Technology Club.

He’ll share with us safari experiences including meeting and learning about the Maasai people who are one of the most iconic and culturally resilient ethnic groups in East Africa. They’ve maintained their traditional way of life despite the pressures of the modern world. In the Maasai culture wealth is determined by how many cows and children they have. We will also learn about the Hadzabe, one of the last hunter gatherer tribes in Africa.

We’ll learn why Kenya and Tanzania and their neighbors are considered the premier wildlife destinations on Earth. They were also there during the great wildebeest migration, where they saw miles of wildebeest stretch along the Kenyan savanna and learned why these animals migrate. The area is also known for its massive lion prides and elephant herds, African wild dogs, leopards and cheetahs, giraffes, unimaginable bird diversity, and much more. Their experiences included extended time in the Serengeti National Park, the crown jewel of Tanzania’s safari destinations.

As a special treat we’ll also hear about the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and see images from their visit. The Orphanage rescues baby elephants that have been orphaned due to poaching, severe droughts, or human-wildlife conflicts. Because baby elephants are incredibly social and emotionally fragile they are paired with dedicated keepers who act as surrogate mothers—even sleeping with them at night. Rescued rhinos are also cared for in the nursery. During their visit they were able to witness the mud baths and feeding and if you join us, so will you.

We hope you’ll be able to attend this presentation on Oct. 27 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the La Mesa Room.

We also look forward to you joining us for other future travel presentations. If you would like to be a presenter and/or help us coordinate “Travel Talk Tuesday” (TTT), please contact Wonona Davis at sbrtraveltalktuesday@gmail.com.
