Sandy Schlager
During the first week in June, Sandy Schlager was able to fulfill a dream to visit Paris and see the sights as well as attend grand slam tennis matches for a couple of days at Roland Garros. The weather was cooperative with temperatures in the mid-seventies to eighty range and partly to mostly sunny skies.
The tennis grounds are rather small covering 7.4 acres. That’s about half the size of the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens in California, so the main courts, Jacques Chatrier and Suzanne Lenglen, seem intimate and cozy compared to other tennis stadia.
At Chatrier our seats were about eight rows up from the court right on the service line. Great seats. We could see and hear everything going on during the matches.
There were so many of the top players participating. In the men’s singles draw we saw Rafael Nadal, Nowak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, Dominic Thiem and others. Among the women, there were Simona Halep, Caroline Garcia, Karolina Pliskova and Jalenea Ostapenko.
Nadal won the finals match for the men, and Jalena Ostapenko took the women’s title. It was thrilling to see such great tennis played up close and personal.
All agreed that the trip to Paris was a wonderful experience but left us with a yearning to return again one day!
