What a great start to the New Year. Our weekly games provided the perfect backdrop to the golfing stage. Raising the curtain each week with an individually flighted competition or a team competition be it two-man, four-man or best ball, or a scramble, or a rotating scramble and, of course, a Stableford scoring event have been our theater. Unique events such as four clubs and a putter, fuggetaboutit individual competition and the always pretty in pink Paula Creamer Open with our golfers resplendent in pink brought the house down inspiring greater fellowship and interest within our membership. It has truly been a quarter with something for everyone.
We are in the throes of the inter-club PIMA Cup event. Five of the eight tournament dates have been completed. The tournament playoff for all eight clubs will be at our home, SaddleBrooke Ranch Golf Club May 5, 2018. We expect another great tournament day.
Members have enjoyed two special events. Our Club’s Ryder Cup was played over three days in February ending with the Red Team victorious. It was a spirited competition pitting 28 Red Team Golfers against 28 Blue Team golfers. Congratulations to the Red captains Mike Mycka and Dave Hansel; and the Blue Team captains Larry Sandoval and Rob Nemecek. They deftly managed the strategy implicit in the Ryder Cup format enhancing the comradery of our members. It is no secret that bragging rights count. The buzz around the 19th hole indicates the Blue Team expects a much different result next year. Congratulations to all the golfers Red and Blue alike.
March brought another special event, Match Play. It’s structured as a flighted competition with eight golfers of comparable skill in each flight. A winner will be decided in each flight at the conclusion of the three-day tournament. It would not be golf if scores were not kept, but it’s all about the W or the L on each hole. A one up wins the match. (Note event is ongoing at press time.)
Not to be upstaged our very own Club Championship tees it up April 18 and 19. Though it’s a flighted tournament all know that there is one true Club Champion. That Champion is the low gross score over 36 holes from the pine tees. However, each flight will have a winner/champion, too. He will be the low net total over the 36 holes. In the event of ties a tie breaker round will be played.
The SBRMGA is here for all. The many and varied events enhance the fellowship within our community. If you have golfed with your SBRMGA great. If not, become an active member and join the fellowship.
A special thanks to Ed Robertson, Harley Schlachter and Paul Lapotosky chairmen of our weekly events, special events and PIMA Cup committees. Not to be overlooked is Jack Gressingh who steps up whenever the Chairmen need help. Their commitment ensures our members enjoy high quality, varied and equitably designed competitions. Step up to the tee and join the fun today.
