The Art of Memory—a New Class!

Erin Newman

The SBR Art Club is bringing a brand new class, the Art of Memory with Mary Scrimgeour, to our list of classes offered. Students will explore the art of transforming memories into creative expression. Through writing, collage, and mixed media techniques, we’ll bring personal memories to life on the page, turning emotions, experiences, and reflections into meaningful visual stories. This is a space to honor our past, embrace our journey, and reconnect with our creative selves in a way that is personal, intuitive, and deeply fulfilling. No art experience is needed—just an open heart and a willingness to explore. Provided materials include journals, paint, palette, 2 brushes, water cup, black and white photo copies, various collage papers, and glue.

Please bring an apron or something to protect clothing, a memory photo printed in black and white (but not necessary to learn the technique, there will be extra images available), color pencils (if you have).

Mary Scrimgeour is a self-taught artist, storyteller, and creative guide with a rich background in painting, graphic design, clothing design, and teaching. After leaving a well-established art career, she embraced a nomadic lifestyle, focusing on art books and journaling as a way to document her journey. Mary is passionate about helping women reconnect with their creativity, using journaling as a tool for self-expression and discovery. Through her workshops, she inspires others to explore their inner world, embrace imperfection, and tell their own unique stories.

Let’s Dye a Market Bag!

Erin Newman

The SBR Art Club is bringing back Mary Gavan to teach a dye class. This is where you will learn different resist and tie-dye techniques using fiber reactive dyes, learning how to apply them to a cotton market bag, and then dye it with fiber reactive dyes. The dyes are permanent, ensuring many years of use. Dyes and materials are available during class. Your hand-dyed market bag will go home with you, allowing the dye to develop completely before washing. No previous dyeing experience is needed! More specific information is on the SBR Art Club “Club Express” website.

Mary Gavan is a Tucson artist known for her fiber arts and painted scarves. She has received accolades from “Shout Out Arizona.” She started in the 1970s as a weaver creating handwoven fiber wall art for galleries and art shows. Unique colors became a necessary component of her art, which led her to learn the art of dyeing. Years of dyeing yarn and working with color lead her to use similar skills to dye fabrics. Mary has been teaching yarn dying and painted scarves for several years.

Join Mary’s market bag class on April 23 for a fun afternoon!

Whimsical and Fun Watercolor—Water Droplets and Petals

Erin Newman

The SBR Art Club is bringing another watercolor instruction to our list of classes offered. The instructor, Liz Iverson, is an artist and teacher specializing in watercolor painting. She has had her paintings displayed in several locations in Tucson, at the SAAG Gallery, and in Oro Valley.

We are going to paint 3Dlooking water droplets, and pair them with soft, simple florals. We will be using watercolor paints to create these beautiful illusion water droplets, among your choice of flowers. This class is suitable for beginners, as we will be practicing the techniques before creating the class project! All materials are supplied (paper, paint, brushes, etc.).

Please join Liz Iverson as she demonstrates stunning water droplets using vibrant watercolors.
