Returning Class: Introduction to Zentangle—January 20

Dale Farland

Many residents of SaddleBrooke Branch are now fans of Zentangle art. Are you “Zentangle Curious” but are afraid to take the plunge? This class is for you! Have you been practicing Zentangle but would like to take a step back and just enjoy the practice and perhaps learn a few new tables? This class is for you as well.

Zentangle art is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. These structured patterns are called tangles. You create tangles with combinations of dots, lines, simple curves, S-curves, and orbs. These simple shapes are the “Elemental Strokes” in all Zentangle art. These patterns are drawn on small pieces of paper called “tiles,” which you can assemble into mosaics. Zentangles can be combined to create a larger mosaic piece of art or simply stand alone.

Val Barsevich is a Certified Zentangle Teacher and she will lead participants through the basics of the Zentangle method, which promotes mindfulness and creativity through an easytolearn and fun way to create designs. The class is for all levels of ability as no experience is required to be successful.

Class Description: Zentangle is a mindfulness technique that many people find relaxing and has been found to have benefits in reducing anxiety, relieving stress, and increasing focus. The “ZEN” part of the word Zentangle.

New Class: Gel Monoprinting Class Coming January 23

Dale Farland

The SBR Art Club is bringing a new art medium, Gel Monoprinting, to our list of classes offered. In a nutshell, gel printing is a form of monoprinting that involves creating unique prints by transferring paint from a gel plate onto paper. The process allows for the layering of colors and textures, producing vibrant, abstract, and one-of-a-kind artworks.

In the class, students learn the basics of printing with a gel plate and will complete two finished art pieces to take home. Students receive a 5 x 7 gel plate and a brayer (roller). Paper and acrylic paint are provided.

The instructor, Kathie Scrimgeour, is an artist specializing in Gel Monoprinting. She has her art displayed at Southern Arizona Arts Guild at La Encantada and the shop at the Tucson Museum of Art. She recently did an art demonstration for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at ASU.

Class Description: Explore the creative world of Gel Monoprinting in this hands-on workshop! Participants will begin with an introduction to essential materials such as acrylic paints, stencils, and various textures. You will learn the fundamentals of creating monoprints using a gel plate, with step-by-step guidance on layering techniques, color experimentation, and composition. Throughout the session, you will have the opportunity to transfer your unique designs onto the paper, building a collection of one-of-a-kind prints. By the end of the class, you will leave not only with your artwork but also with a brayer and a 5 x 7 gel plate to continue your artistic journey at home.
