Creating With Friends
Debora Witten
The third Thursday of March, March 20 from 1 to 3 p.m., will be the next Creating With Friends. There will be a demo and a “hands-on” experience with buttons. Yes, we are going to get creative with an everyday item. Artist Erin Newman (resident guru of paper quilling and journaling) has added creating with buttons to her arsenal. Come and check out this fun experiment. Supplies will be provided. No cost to you … no membership needed … try something new!
January 16 was the first event of the year for Creating With Friends. There was a wonderful pastel demo by Pat Duncan. She will be teaching pastel classes in April. Check out SBRartclub.clubexpress.com for more information. On Feb. 20, there was a demo of simple Zen designs by artist Nancy Wolby. This is a great art form to relax and unwind.
If buttons are not your thing, experiment with pastels, watercolors, pencils, pen and ink, or continue with Zen design.
Hope to see you on the third Thursday of March from 1 to 3 p.m. in the art room in the Creative Arts building. Just show up and get button happy. Any questions, text Ginny Wise at 970-712-9596.

Soft Pastel Art Fundamentals Starting April 9
Dale Farland
Step out of your comfort zone and tap into your creative spirit to explore using soft pastels and find the joy of painting a beautiful landscape. Enjoy the company of other artists who want to learn about this beautiful medium and enjoy the company of others who have a desire to develop their artistic skills.
The instructor for this two-part series is Patricia Duncan, a representational pastel and oil plein air painter and teacher. She is a resident of SaddleBrooke Ranch from November to April, where she has the opportunity to plein air paint, finding beauty in the desert landscape. From May to the end of October, she spends her time in Northwest Wisconsin surrounded by the lakes and farmland. The desert’s natural beauty and the countryside of Wisconsin continue to nurture her love for the outdoors and is a source of inspiration for plein air painting and teaching.
Her art training background started with a solid drawing foundation in charcoal and pastel with instructors at the Edina Art Center in Minnesota. To further her art education, she studied plein air oil painting under Joseph Paquet (Plein Air Painters of America) in St. Paul, Minn., for 12 years and with Jeff Hurinenko for seven years learning the Old Master’s Danish/Flemish method of oil painting through Still Life and Portraiture.

You may choose to do an underpainting with watercolor after sketching your drawing on the substrate surface. Then, you will block in with pastels, the dark, mid, and light values. Reschedule Creative Landscapes with Wet and Dry Media Class – Now April 10
Dale Farland
Artist Rebekah Vermeulen is returning to SaddleBrooke Ranch to teach a different dimension of watercolor pencil art on Thursday, April 10 from 1 to 3 p.m. This class is rescheduled from February. Rebekah previously taught a class utilizing watercolor pencils and it was well received by the students. It was a new art medium for many of us. This class is open to beginners as the landscape drawings will be through the individual interpretation vs. exact realism. So, prior experience is not necessary. Using watercolor pencils presents a different aspect of watercolor drawing. Many people think it is easier.
Rebekah Vermeulen is a mixed media artist who started drawing after being diagnosed with and battling an autoimmune disease at age 18. She is a graduate of Milan Art Institute where she learned to combine both traditional and contemporary painting techniques with her own expressive style. In addition to a solo art show at Oro Valley’s Artist & Makers Studios, her work has been featured in local businesses, gallery exhibitions, and fundraising events.
Class Description: You will be making landscape drawings that capture the beauty of nature using watercolor pencils alongside other drawing tools of choice. Students will follow along with a step-by-step demonstration by Rebekah as to how to use watercolor pencils to map out drawings on papers and from there gradually layer different colors and shades to build up the picture and add expressive marks for a fun and dynamic look. Therefore, the drawing is both wet and dry. This class is beginner friendly as it emphasizes creative interpretation rather than exact realism.
Date for Class: Thursday, April 10
Time: 1 to 3 p.m.
Class Fee: $30
Class Size: Minimum: 4, Maximum: 15
Registration Deadline Date: Thursday, April 3
Materials the Instructor Will Provide: Instructions, paper, watercolor brushes to be used with the watercolor pencils the student brings.
Materials Participants to Bring: Watercolor pencils, which can be purchased at Walmart, Amazon, or any craft store. Optional items are pens, markers, paint markers, water soluble crayons, or any other drawing tools of choice. If you have a brush from the first class she taught, bring that brush.
