Paper quilled snowflakes (photo by Erin Newman)
Learn to Make a Paper Quilled Snowflake!
Erin Newman
Christmas in September! Join SaddleBrooke Ranch (SBR) Art Club member Erin Newman as we learn the art of curling, coiling, and rolling paper!
Paper quilling/filigree is an ancient art form that involves using strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and adhered together to create detailed, decorative designs. The paper strip is wound around a slotted tool, creating a coil. By pinching the ends of the coil, the artist begins to build a variety of shapes which are endless in creativity.
In class you will learn how to make snowflakes. All materials will be provided. Depending on the time, each participant will make one or two snowflakes. Come join the fun!
Date for Class: Monday, Sept. 15
Time: 9 to 11:30 a.m.
Class Fee: $35

New Class: Acrylic Pour Chain Fan Art on September 18
Dale Farland
This class is a new version of acrylic pour being offered by SaddleBrooke Ranch resident Melody Van Ess on Thursday, Sept. 18, from 1 to 4 p.m. You may be familiar with traditional acrylic pour art; however, this class will demonstrate a different technique that will result in a fan/flower expression on your two canvases. Some people see a fan and others see a flower with this art. The student will create two 11 x 14 or 12 x 16 artworks, one with a white/grey background and one with a black background. Both will be striking.
There is no experience necessary to accomplish these works of art. Your imagination will be what allows you to reveal either two canvases which complement each other or two canvases which are each exceptional in style and color. This art process involves the student using a chain in conjunction with specialized acrylic paint to result in a fan/ flower creation. Different colors will look striking depending on the color background.
The instructor, Melody Van Ess, has been experimenting with a variety of styles and patterns utilizing various mediums with the acrylic paint. Each one she creates is unique, and this class offers the students an opportunity to learn her artistic skills.

Examples of Alcohol Inks artwork from instructor, Cathy Ratliff
New SBR Art Club Class: Introduction to Alcohol Inks on September 29
Cathy Ratliff
Alcohol Inks is an art medium that dries and leaves ink behind by evaporation. They are dye-based, meaning they are translucent and allow light to pass through, creating luminous effects when layered.
Class Description
In this class, the students will try various techniques to play and learn resulting in an individualized 9 x 12-inch piece of art. Alcohol Inks work by blending and creating unique effects and is a creative, uncontrolled process. Every piece of art will reflect the unusual characteristics of the ink flow.
Each student will begin their step-by-step adventure, playing on smaller “paper” before moving to the 9 x 12-inch final abstract piece. Please note the picture is an example and it will not be recreated exactly. Various ink colors will be available for your personal piece.
About 20 years ago, SBR resident and instructor Cathy Ratliff first learned about Alcohol Inks from Tim Holtz, who created them in various colors for Ranger Alcohol Inks. She was fortunate to take classes from him and continue to learn techniques as the product has artistically grown. Cathy expresses that she enjoys the freedom of the inks doing what they want, even when trying to guide them, they create their own magical outcome.
Cathy has taken various classes from many talented artists, in addition to teaching many different mediums, from paper arts, collage, and clay. Her work has been on blogs, in addition to sites online. Cathy is inspired by nature, other creative people, memories, and emotions. Her “let’s give this a try” attitude has provided many hours of fun in her artistic endeavors. She credits her time spent creating and teaching art with helping her heal while grieving and expressing joy and gratefulness in her life. Cathy is looking forward to attending more artful gatherings locally as well as ArtWalks in Europe in the next year or two.
