Sue Fetters

Terri Thomas taught a class at the SaddleBrooke Ranch (SBR) Mudslingers studio called Basic Carving Techniques. This class served as an introduction to surface design methods including Sgraffito, Mishima, and Relief Carving. During the session, students learned the differences among these carving styles and applied their chosen technique to create a unique ceramic tile.

Sgraffito, Mishima, and Relief Carving are three popular ways to decorate clay during the leather-hard stage. Sgraffito involves covering the clay with a contrasting slip and scratching a design through it to reveal the color underneath. Mishima is the opposite; you carve a design into the clay first, fill the lines with slip, and then scrape away the excess so the pattern is flush with the surface. Relief Carving involves cutting out background clay giving the piece a 3D texture.

We’re so fortunate at Mudslingers to have so many talented artisans who volunteer their time and talents to teach our members. Terri has taught many classes and continues to share her expertise with all of us at the studio. Thank you,Terri!

The Mudslingers studio is located in the Arts and Technology Center. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.
