Technically winter was not over yet when we played the annual Updegraff Tournament in gorgeous springlike conditions on March 16 and 17. Jean Cheszek and Barb Simms (Pink Team Captains) and Suz Schuster and Lynn Steele-Flynn (Blue Team Captains) strategically selected their team players and announced the pairings and team opponents at the Reveal Party on March 13.
On day one with each team wearing their best pink or blue colors, the format was match play. The Pink Team finished with 9 points; the Blue Team with 8 points. A close competition! On day two, St. Patrick’s Day, both teams opted for either team colors or Wearin’ of the Green (what a colorful sight). The format was Chapman Scotch, an exciting game that required alternate shots and remembering whose turn it was. The Pink Team prevailed on day two with 12 points, and 5 points for the Blue Team. Congratulations to the winners! The Pink Team scored 21 points to 13 Blue Team points.
And with true luck of the Irish our Trish Minard made a hole–in–one on St. Paddy’s Day, on hole #14 using a 6 hybrid at 92 yards.
What would St. Paddy’s Day be without our very own Leprechauns. Steve Schuster and Tom Flynn bestowed on our players an “Irish Pot of Gold” for putting out on hole #1. Rather than alternate shot putting, each team took advantage of their treasure to play a scramble to hole out (great fun!).
After the competition ended on St. Patrick’s Day, lunch (and dessert) was served on the Grill patio. Food was delish and we celebrated Trish’s achievement with Irish cheer. Thanks to the Ranch House Grill staff who created a tasty lunch and timely service for 68 hungry women. They are there for our club each League Day and tournaments.
The Updegraff Tournament was proudly sponsored by Harn Legacy Estate Planning and A1 Golf Carts.
In closing, “May the wind be always at your back.”
