Fourteen octopuses for Casa de los Niños children
Carol Andrews
A recent donation of machine-knitted throw-square samples was gratefully received by Creative Giving. While the group initially explored several project ideas for the squares, none seemed to be the right fit—until a timely conversation sparked a perfect solution.
A volunteer with Creative Giving spoke with a friend who volunteers at Casa de Los Niños, a Tucson nonprofit that supports children and families facing trauma and adversity. It turned out the knitted squares were just the right size to become cozy afghans for the children. Casa de Los Niños was thrilled to receive them—and even more thrilled to see how much the children loved them.
But the collaboration didn’t stop there.
A Perfect Match Between Needs and Supplies
Staff at Casa de Los Niños mentioned they were hoping to receive crocheted octopuses—small, comforting toys that children could hold during therapy sessions. Creative Giving volunteer Andrea Hopkins stepped in and crocheted 14 octopuses, each one soft, colorful, and perfectly huggable. These tactile toys serve as fidget items and emotional comforters for kids navigating difficult moments.
This collaboration is a shining example of Creative Giving’s mission: to create meaningful connections between generous donors and those in need.
