Chair Yoga transforms traditional yoga poses into accessible movements. These poses (asanas) can be performed while seated or standing using a chair for support and a fitness prop. This adaptation ensures that the benefits of yoga, once thought to be exclusive for the flexible or fit, are now within reach for everyone. For more than being a prop, the chair becomes an extension of the body facilitating movements that stretch, strengthen, and stabilize.
The physical benefits are enhanced flexibility, a critical factor in preventing the stiffness and pain that often comes with age. Strength, too, is markedly improved, focusing on core stability and muscle endurance. The physical benefits contribute to a greater sense of independence, a treasure for anyone in their later years. Emotional and spiritual benefits arise and enhance greater calm, peace and inner trust.
Begin where you are with what you have. The focus on the practice is consistency vs. intensity. Practice and learn breathing techniques (pranayama) to foster better concentration and mental focus. Slow deep breathing stimulates the movement of the diaphragm, massaging the internal organs, toning the abdominal muscles, and activating the parasympathetic nervous system—reducing stress.
The Chair Yoga program at SaddleBrooke Ranch has grown from one class per week to six, and the class community is often filled with connection, support, and laughter during classes. Residents have seen marked improvements in strength and balance! The Chair Yoga schedule is online or visit the Fitness Center for more information.
