Join us as we travel to the Himalayan countries of Nepal and Bhutan with fellow resident George Everette.

George and his wife, Mary Jane, moved to the Ranch several years ago after having lived in the town of Oracle for many years. George is an avid traveler with his first overseas trip to New Zealand in 1974. Since then he has traveled to all seven continents and also lived and taught in Japan for five years. His art and photography background includes having been commissioned to create public sculptures and murals in Alaska, Colorado, Illinois, and Kansas.

George will share with us details of his solo trip to these countries that contain eight of the world’s 10 highest mountains, including Mount Everest. This trip had the distinction of being a private trip, so in each country it was just him, a driver, and a guide. He’ll share pros and cons of a private tour vs a group or small group tour and how he approaches planning for a solo trip.

The trip started in Nepal, and  was a great introduction to the Himalayas and a stark contrast to the more placid kingdom of Bhutan. In Bhutan his journey became a vegetarian-fueled (it is illegal to butcher animals in the kingdom) religious pilgrimage to numerous temples and shrines, each further and higher than the last. His time in Bhutan culminated in the climb and visit to the iconic Tiger’s Nest (at an altitude of 10,230 feet). His visit to the Tiger’s Nest included an annual unveiling of the massive tapestry at the five-day Paro Tshechu (significant cultural) festival.

He has lots to share, and we hope you’ll be able to attend. So mark your calendar and join Travel Talk Tuesday on March 31 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the La Mesa Room.
