The threat of continued bad weather caused the board to postpone the start of the anticipated Del Suds tournament for a week. The Del Suds tournament abbreviated through the years from La Conquistadora del Sud, or our Lady the Conqueror of the South. It gained its name from the small wooden statue of the Madonna and child now in the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe, N.M. She arrived in 1626 brought by wagon train via Mexico City by Priest Fray Alonso de Benavides. There is a long history of armies carrying statues of saints into battle for varied purposes. She was given a new title in 1992 when then Archbishop Robert Sanchez, bestowed her with the name Our Lady of Peace. Imagine our lady golfers in southern Arizona battling it out on the golf course to be the victorious La Conquistadora!
The first day of play, March 1, produced an air of excitement as every lady agonized over their misplaced, misdirected, and mishit shots to rejoicing over the perfectly hit tee shot and expertly read putt. The weather cooperated and the rain held off until play was completed. Your veteran players took photos of their score cards so they would know exactly where they needed to improve for the final round.
March 7 provided a beautiful day to improve those scores. The energy was tangible as Mike and Ken patrolled the range watching the players warm up, guessing who might prevail on this day. Your 2023 Del Suds winner is Phyllis Pettijohn with an impressive 58 over the two-day event, and how lovely she was modeling the silver conquistador helmet. Please thank the sponsor for both days of this wonderful event, Morris Hall.
The closest to the pin winners on March 1 were: Jeanne Jensen, hole number 2, sponsored by Team Platinum Realty, and Barb Simms, hole number 14, sponsored by Youthful Glow. March 7 closest to the pin was sponsored by your own SBRWGA and the winners were Kathy Anderson and Lenore Kohloff. Several skilled ladies chipped in to better their scores. Let’s congratulate Kathy Anderson, Carol Mihal, Mimi Heywood, Phyllis Pettijohn and Evie Thompson.
There is more excitement to come for all you golf fans. At press time, the ladies were preparing for the President’s Cup on March 27 and 28.
