Honor Flight Southern Arizona is a non-profit organization dedicated to transporting military veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials honoring their service. The all-expense paid three-day trips are entirely funded by donations and are designed for veterans of ‘pivotal conflicts. The organization recently completed its 36th flight, which departed from Tucson International Airport and included Korean War and Vietnam War veterans. This trip included visits to the individual War memorials, the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, and a rousing welcome home ceremony upon return to Tucson.

To qualify for a flight, veterans must meet the following criteria:

* Residencymust be a resident of Southern Arizona

* ServiceServed honorably on active duty

* CostThe journey is completely free for the veteran

Veterans are accompanied by guardians who assist them during the trip and ensure their safety.

My husband, Bob Lewis, a resident of SaddleBrooke Ranch and a Vietnam Era Veteran, recently returned from the 36th flight on June 3, 2026. His daughter, Jennifer Lewis, was his guardian. They both came home with gratitude, pride, and honor. This experience touched them deeply and gave them appreciation for all the service and sacrifices made more than 57 years ago during the Vietnam War. It was a meaningful and life-changing journey for both of them.

If you or someone you know is interested in participating, you can apply directly through the Honor Flight Southern Arizona website: honorflightsaz.org. The non-profit continuously accepts applications for veterans and volunteers to serve as guardians for upcoming missions. Additionally, the program relies on public support: donations can be made on the official donation page.
