Starting in January 2024, our SBR Social Dance Club is borrowing a novice dance lesson concept from the SaddleBrooke Social Ballroom Club.
Who: Novice dancers who have not danced before or it has been a long time
What: Free novice dance lessons for Rumba, Waltz, Foxtrot, East Coast Swing, Tango, and Cha Cha
When: First three Thursdays of each month (January through December 2024); 5 to 5:50 p.m.
Where: Group Fitness Room of La Hacienda Club (capacity 24)
Why: Our goal is to give novice dancers a feel for, a taste of, an experience with up to six dances. Then, a novice may choose to participate in the monthly Social Ballroom and Line Dances as well as take beginner and intermediate lessons to learn more dance patterns. In addition, learning to dance reduces the risk of dementia and improves memory. (Source: “Is Dancing Good for the Brain?”, By Angela Betsaida B. Laguipo, BSN, reviewed by Dr. Liji Thomas, MD; March 14, 2023)
How: The first two Thursdays of each month, there is a 50-minute class. In a class, basic steps and one pattern for two dances are presented in 25-minute segments. Thus, over two Thursday classes, four dances with two patterns each are introduced. On the third Thursday of each month, the class reviews the basic steps and patterns of the four dances. Then a Practice Dance with music gives novices the real feel and enjoyment of dancing.
Professional instructor: Christine Hoskins. Dancers with some experience will assist her.
Notes: Novice participants do not have to join the SBR Social Dance Club, but they must be SaddleBrooke Ranch residents. They can take the free lessons for as many of the six dances in which they are interested. They can re-take novice dance lesson classes as well. Registering with a dance partner helps, but is not necessary.
How to register: Go to the SBR Social Dance Club website calendar (http://sbrsbdc.club). In January and February 2024 on Thursdays, click the link to the novice dance lesson to register. The two classes of four lessons and Practice Dance are free.
