Library Committee Announces “Read America 250” Program for 2026

On July 4, 2026, America will celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Some of the most famous words in our history and that of democracy itself were penned in that document:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness…”

Joining in with America 250, the nation’s celebration of the anniversary, the Library Committee has announced a Read America 250 Program for 2026, and invites all members of the community to participate.

Three featured books will be chosen reflecting the bravery and conflicts which surrounded the decision to separate from Great Britain. Forums are planned which will promote lively discussions into the risks our founding fathers and mothers took for independence.

The first book will be announced in the January SaddleBrooke Ranch Roundup, with the forum taking place in February. This will be followed by announcements of the remaining books and forums.

An additional reading challenge will encourage readers to choose a book a month, of any genre, that focuses on key people or events in the history of the United States. These books, of the reader’s choosing, can be fiction or non-fiction, covering any time period, but focusing on American historical figures or events.

The Committee will have a shelf within the Library dedicated to the Read America 250 Program, with both the chosen books and suggested readings of various genres.
