New Class: Learn the Fine Art of Printmaking
Dale Farland
Are you looking to try a new art medium this year? Join SBR resident and instructor Deb Gilbertson to learn the traditional fine art of printmaking called Lino Print (also referred to as Lino Cut). Here is your opportunity to learn this technique without having to personally purchase all the materials and tools to learn how to do this art medium.
Lino Print is the relief printmaking technique where artists carve a design into a linoleum block, then ink the raised surface and press the paper on it to create a series of numbered, multiple prints. This process is similar to woodcut using a block of wood, but with a softer material. Linoleum allows for detailed, textured art, using hand tools that make the art process easy for everyone to enjoy. No experience is necessary so everyone can learn this new art medium over the four weekly Wednesday sessions starting Feb. 11.
Over these four weekly sessions, students will learn the art’s history, explore samples of printmaking, and create a series of prints. Participants will learn how to design and then transfer an image onto a linoleum block, then, how to carve, ink, and print using their block as a “printing plate” for both paper and fabric. Deb will structure the classes to accommodate all levels of experience.
Deb Gilbertson has an extensive background as an artist, designer, and teacher. Her specialty art medium is Lino Printmaking and she enjoys teaching this traditional fine art to others.

Returning Class: Introduction to Zentangle—February 9
Dale Farland
Many residents of SaddleBrooke Branch are now fans of Zentangle art. Are you “Zentangle Curious” but are afraid to take the plunge? This class is for you! Have you been practicing Zentangle but would like to take a step back and just enjoy the practice and perhaps learn a few new tables? This class is for you as well.
Zentangle art is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. These structured patterns are called tangles. You create tangles with combinations of dots, lines, simple curves, S-curves, and orbs. These simple shapes are the “Elemental Strokes” in all Zentangle art. These patterns are drawn on small pieces of paper called “tiles,” which you can assemble into mosaics. Zentangles can be combined to create a larger mosaic piece of art or simply stand alone.
Val Barsevich is a Certified Zentangle Teacher and she will lead participants through the basics of the Zentangle method, which promotes mindfulness and creativity through an easy–to–learn and fun way to create designs. The class is for all levels of ability as no experience is required to be successful.
Class Description: Zentangle is a mindfulness technique that many people find relaxing and has been found to have benefits in reducing anxiety, relieving stress, and increasing focus. The “Zen” part of the word Zentangle.
