Learn to express your creative side in an exciting new way with cold wax. Cold wax is an oil painting medium that is a buttery soft paste made of beeswax mixed with a small amount of solvent and resin. The cold wax paste is mixed with the oil paint on the palette. Cold wax adds body, transparency, and depth to the oil paint.
A three-session SBR Painters Club class, led by artist Nancy Derifield, will focus on learning the Cold Wax technique to create an abstract landscape. No painting experience is required.
Applying cold wax paint is the exciting part. Nancy uses a variety of tools such as squeegees, trowels, cabinet scrapers, painting knives, old credit cards, icing spreaders, brayers and rollers, and silicone bladed painting tools. The paint has a creamy, buttery texture and spreads and layers beautifully. One of the most fun parts of the process is mark making. The best explanation of cold wax is a technique of applying layers and also excavating to reveal the previous layers.
The class sessions will be in the Fine Arts Room at the Creative Arts and Technology Center from 1 to 4 p.m. on three consecutive Sundays: Jan. 19, Jan. 26, and Feb. 3. The cost is $135 for members and $145 for nonmembers and includes all materials for the class. The following take-home items are valued at $30:
* 8 oz. plastic jar of cold wax (the club purchased in bulk to pass on the savings to members)
* Bowl scraper tool used to apply cold wax
* Gallery wrapped canvas 11”x14”
Oil paint, gesso, tissue paper, and all the marking tools to create a history of texture for your painting will be provided.
There will not be a specific landscape subject that you will be duplicating. You may bring photos of landscapes that appeal to you, and the instructor will also have examples.
Payment, via check to SBR Painters Club, can be dropped off in the SBR Painters Club lock box (not the Art Club lock box) outside the Fine Arts Room. Your spot is not reserved until your payment has been received. The workshop is limited to 5 to 12 participants, so make your payment early to reserve your place!
