Rainbow Rotary: A New Club on a Bold Mission of Inclusion and Impact

Chad Denson

In November 2024, a bold new chapter in Southern Arizona’s civic landscape began: the Rainbow Rotary Club was officially chartered as the sixth LGBTQ-focused chapter in the world under Rotary International. In less than a year, we’ve already proven that small clubs can spark big change—both locally and globally.

Founded with a vision of inclusivity, Rainbow Rotary is part of a broader movement to reshape Rotary International into a more welcoming and representative organization. Once limited to men only (until 1986), Rotary is evolving, and our club is proud to lead that evolution right here in Southern Arizona. We are open to all who value service, inclusion, and community.

One of our cornerstone projects is the transformation of Intermountain’s Nuevo Camino courtyard. What was once a plain and institutional space is being reimagined into a vibrant sanctuary for youth. With the help of a $2,500 grant from Banner University Medical Center, we’re installing turf, colorful Adirondack chairs, games, string lights, and bold accent walls. But this is more than décor—it’s a message of dignity and belonging for every young person who walks through that courtyard.

Beyond our local efforts, we’ve extended our impact across the globe. Rainbow Rotary is a proud supporter of the Africa Amani Safehouse Project, a humanitarian initiative providing sanctuary for LGBTQ refugees in Kenya—many of whom have fled persecution in Uganda, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. The safehouse provides critical housing and community for displaced LGBTQ youth ages 18–26, with plans underway for a second facility focused on lesbian women and mothers.

We’ve also partnered with CASA of Pima County to uplift LGBTQIA+ youth in foster care. Through thoughtful, personalized care packages—filled with Pride items, requested essentials, and comfort snacks—we’ve created moments of joy and recognition for youth who too often feel unseen. Each package is a reminder: you are celebrated, you are valued, and you are not alone.

Rainbow Rotary is a growing, dynamic community—and we’re just getting started. We welcome individuals who want to serve with purpose, celebrate diversity, and make tangible change. Whether you’re a longtime Rotarian or completely new to the movement, there’s a place for you here.
