The SaddleBrooke Sunrise Rotary Club is excited to announce that its much-anticipated quilt sale will be held this coming Oct. 28 and 29 (Tuesday and Wednesday) at the Sunny Side Up Café in Catalina, Ariz. Located just south of SaddleBrooke at 15800 N. Oracle Road, the Café is graciously opening one of its side rooms for the club to display and sell its “quilts of love,” which were generously donated to the club last fall by David Dettmann and his late wife, Grace. Proceeds from the sale of these one-of-a-kind quilts will support both the Mammoth-San Manuel Unified School District and Arizona Families F.I.R.S.T. (Families In Recovery Succeeding Together). Perfect for the approaching cooler weather and holiday season, quilt sizes range from baby to king-sized and all 20+ will be offered for sale first come, first served. Mark your calendar now for this don’t-miss event and also make sure to show your appreciation to the Café by including a hearty breakfast or lunch in your plans!
Those newer to SaddleBrooke Ranch and SaddleBrooke may not be aware of these quilts’ history, which was shared in this paper more completely last fall (“A Love of Quilting Becomes Quilts of Love”). The shorter story is that David and Grace Dettmann made these quilts together over the course of a decade while living here in SaddleBrooke. Grace, unfortunately, passed in 2018 and David soon realized there are only so many quilts any one person can use. He determined that their quilts would do much more good in the hands of people who will love and use them (versus being folded in storage), while simultaneously raising funds for organizations that pour love back into the local community. (As a note, you can see two examples of their handiwork hanging in the Desert Life Pharmacy patient rooms in SaddleBrooke.)
The SaddleBrooke Sunrise Rotary Club (one of two Rotary clubs in SaddleBrooke/SaddleBrooke Ranch) is a fun, service-oriented group making a tangible difference in the community. It meets in SaddleBrooke Ranch the first and third Thursdays of every month and participates in a variety of local service projects throughout the year.
