The members of Mudslingers were recently treated to another informative demonstration about Table Top Totems. Janelle Sundberg is an expert on the design and construction of ceramic totems of all sizes and shapes. What makes Janelle’s method so engaging is the freedom to rearrange. Because the pieces are separate, she shows how you can swap the order of the segments to change the look and “story” of the totem whenever you like. She focuses on teaching how to balance the different shapes into the look you want, but she also stresses the importance of “thinking outside the box” attitude when creating a totem. Have fun with the arrangement—there is no right or wrong way to put together the segments.
Although most totems are placed outside in a garden or yard, Janelle has introduced the idea of table top totems designed for interior spaces. During her demonstration she guided the participants through the process of creating bases and spacers using the pinch pot and balloon method. We thank Janelle for sharing her expertise.
The classes and demonstrations offered by the pottery studio are so helpful for our members no matter what skill level. There is always something new to learn with the art of pottery making.
The Mudslingers studio is located in the Arts and Technology Center. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.
