Despite rain, cold, and wind there is never a dull moment at the SaddleBrooke Ranch Tennis Association (SBRTA)! After six weeks of friendly competitive play and some nasty weather, winners of the Queen of the Court Tennis Social were crowned at a lovely brunch hosted by the event coordinator, Sue Cook (who was honored with the title of “Queen of Pretty Much Everything” for her tireless work organizing the many tournaments and social events).
Following the brunch, Sue distributed the awards given to players who had the highest percentage of wins on their court on the last day. Awardees are: Court 4: Lucinda Legel; Court 3: Liz Walker; Court 2: Linda Inhelder; and Court 1: Leslie Castner, who was also the overall winner of the Queen of the Court social. She won all her sets throughout the six-week period with an impressive 75% win of all her games played.
Leslie is a new resident at The Ranch and a welcome addition to the SBRTA. She and her husband are from Orlando, Fla. She has been playing tennis for 25 years and was on several leagues throughout Central Florida. She was rated as a 4.5 player in 2010. Here at her new community, she enjoys the many fun activities offered by the club. “The tennis club is so welcoming with such a wide variety of social events and tennis programs!” she says. She and her husband have also joined the Pickleball and Rotary Clubs.
On the heels of the Queen of the Court social play, March shenanigans included a St. Patrick’s Day tennis and POP tennis event, followed by St. Patrick’s Day fixings at the home of Sue and Jim Cook. (Look for photos of this event in the April issue of the Roundup.)
In addition to tournaments and socials, club players participate in several United States Tennis Association (USTA) leagues. The USTA is the national governing body for tennis in the U.S. Membership in USTA leagues allow players/teams to compete against local clubs with the goal of qualifying in southwest sectionals and, ultimately, the national championships. The SBRTA is proud to claim three teams:
* Men’s 40+ 3.0, Captains Mark Adamson and Terry Zimmerman
* Men’s 55+ 7.0, Captains Mark Adamson and Marc Argabright
* Mixed 40+ 7.0, Captains Marc and Debbie Argabright
Congratulations to the Men’s 3.0 team who finished the USTA Winter League play with a 7-0 record! The players who contributed to this notable win are Terry Zimmerman, Lee Stastny, John Nicolich, Thomas Tossey, Mark Drake, Chip Kerth, Steve Ordahl, David Ranville, Greg Walker, Wayne Watkins and Craig Hill. Be sure to follow our club’s USTA teams in their weekly play this spring session.
If you are thinking about learning tennis or POP tennis or want to continue your engagement with tennis, consider joining this very active club. All levels of skills are accommodated. For information about membership, contact Mark Adamson at [email protected].
