Texas Club Does It Again!

Mary Kay Voss

If you heard a whole lotta hootin’, hollerin’ rollin’, out of the Escondido Room on Oct. 30, well—that was your SBR Texas Club cuttin’ loose once again. That rip-roarin’, knee-slappin’ racket came from a wild round of Left/Right/Center. And if you’ve never had the pleasure, bless your heart—one of the simplest, most competitive, and downright funniest money games this side of the Pecos.

We had 22 folks show up—four of ’em brand-spankin’ new members—ready for cocktails, dinner, and good company. Our new twist this time? Drawin’ numbers to see where everyone sat. Judgin’ by all the cacklin’ and chatter, it sure did its job. Folks got to jawin’ with people they don’t normally sit with every night, and that’s the whole point of this club—mix it up and make it memorable.

The Texas Club is open to anybody who’s ever hung their hat in Texas—don’t matter if it was for a year, a decade, or one hot summer that changed ’em forever. This month we welcomed two couples, three of whom lived in Texas for a while and one spouse who joined our ranks of our “tag-alongs and wannabes”—those good-hearted spouses who didn’t grow up Texan but sure wish they had.

Our Texas Club social committee rustles up four to six big ol’ events each year, with the rest filled by these easygoing close-to-home evenings. Next up: mid January, a Texas-sized supper over at El Corral.

Just east of Campbell Avenue sits a historic 1926 building—one of the first restaurant/café/tavern spots east of Oracle Road. That’s the very same place (with a few updates, of course) where El Corral stands today. Their calling card? A legendary Prime Rib that keeps folks comin’ back year after year.

So after the holidays—y’all stop eatin’ for a minute so you’ll have room—because our January event is gonna be a grand ol’ night of Texas meats, good humor, fun games, and prizes. Best of all? You’ll be surrounded by some of the friendliest folks this side of the Rio Grande.

Please invite your Texas buddies who ain’t found us yet—we’ll fix that right quick.
