The third annual Ventana Canyon Golf Outing is in the books. The turnout was spectacular! On Monday, August 3, we did a reverse shotgun start on the Canyon Course at the Ventana Canyon Golf & Racquet Club with 42 golfers (13 women, 29 men).

Something new to this year’s event was an optional dinner the night before at Bazil’s Italian Restaurant. With a crowd of 30 we took over the bar. Many of us, wanting to avoid the long drive home after dinner and the drive back in the morning, opted to stay at the Lodge at Ventana Canyon. This also helped those folks who woke up feeling “slightly less than fresh.”

At precisely 8:30 on Monday morning, the golf staff led us out to our assigned holes on the back nine. The women played a modified scramble and the men played a modified Stableford. Thank you to Carole Erickson and Harley Schlachter for setting up the games.

Ventana Canyon is a spectacular setting up against the south side of the Santa Catalina Mountains and high above the city with mature fauna and flora. The course was in excellent condition. As predicted, due to the monsoons, the course played long and difficult. It was also hot, 102! Most people discovered there are no good places to be other than in the fairway and/or on the green. Even then there were no guarantees! The scores ranged from 80 to 112!

After four and a half hours of enjoying a wonderful golf course and great companionship, we headed for lunch while overlooking mountains. As we ate and rehydrated, the Ventana Canyon golf staff posted scores and announced the winners.

For the ladies, the winning team was Alex Anna, Nancy Galant and Sue Wells. Due to only 12 participants the pot paid first place only $20 to each player.

For the men, there were three flights and closest to the pin in each flight:

A Flight: 1st Dave Hansel $35, 2nd Mark Martin $25, 3rd Steve Thomson $20, Closest to the Pin John De Young

B Flight: 1st Mike White $30, 2nd Tim McCauley $22, 3rd Richard Osterlund $15, Closest to the Pin Mike White

C Flight: 1st Michael Sosin $35, 2nd Brian Kerley $35, 3rd Ken Hull $20 Closest to the Pin Michael Sosin

Prizes were in the form of gift certificates to the Ventana Canyon Pro Shop.

For those who missed this year’s fabulous event, the fourth annual Ventana Canyon Golf Outing will be held on Monday, August 8, 2016.

See you there!
