Wreaths Across America

Linda Nicholson

On Dec. 13, 2025, SaddleBrooke Ranch (SBR) residents participated in laying Christmas wreaths on veterans’ graves at Evergreen Cemetery in Tucson.

It was a beautiful morning to honor veterans on National Wreaths Across America Day. Approximately 100 volunteers across Tucson gathered for the ceremony. SaddleBrooke Ranch was represented by Cynthia and Don Avila, Kay Black and Bob Soucek, Ann and Dave Palenshus, Kathy and Jerry Meyer, and Shannon and Bren Hirschberg.

Sheron Jones, President of Southern AZ Gold Star Mothers, began the ceremony with the posting of the colors by the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution in their period dress. Joseph Morgan sang our national anthem, and Boy Scout Troop 339 led the volunteers in the Pledge of Allegiance. Mike Dyer, Military Order of the Purple Heart, gave the invocation. He spoke of the importance of the continued support their organization provides Gold Star Families in their loss and beyond.

Sheron Jones read off the names of the 11 veterans buried at Evergreen Cemetery who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, holding back her tears as she read the name of her own son, who was killed in Iraq in 2007. It is said that a veteran dies twice: once when their body dies and a second time when their name is no longer spoken. The importance of Remember, Honor, and Teach must be paid forward so that their sacrifice and that of their families are never forgotten.

Sheron Jones called for volunteers who served in the military to place a symbolic wreath for each branch. SBR resident and veteran Ann Palenshus placed the wreath for the U.S. Air Force. SBR resident and veteran Jerry Meyer placed the wreath for the U.S. Coast Guard, and SBR resident and veteran Bren Hirschberg placed the wreath for the U.S. Navy.

Following the retirement of the colors and playing of Taps, the volunteers dispersed to lay the 1,168 wreaths received by Evergreen Cemetery. Taking one wreath at a time, the volunteers stop to say the veteran’s name and offer gratitude for their service and sacrifice as they lay the wreath on the grave.

I would also like to acknowledge the passing of one of our faithful volunteers, MaryAnn Melhorn. MaryAnn and Pete Melhorn have supported and participated in Wreaths Across America since 2014. MaryAnn’s commitment to honoring veterans and supporting Wreaths Across America was a priority in her life. I appreciate her support and friendship.

Thank you to the SaddleBrooke Ranch residents for their donations and raffle ticket purchases to support Wreaths Across America.
