2 Your Health: Therapeutic Massage: What It Is and Why You Need It

Heidi Overman, LMT and Certified Integrative Health Coach

Massage has often been mischaracterized as relaxation or an indulgence reserved for vacations. This is a perception I have dedicated my career to debunk. Utilizing my therapeutic massage techniques, educational background, and demonstrated outcomes, I have successfully assisted numerous clients with old injuries, chronic pain, muscular problems, and quality of life challenges, even when they had lost all hope of improvement.

When you prepare for retirement, you plan on retiring with the ability to vacation, enjoy your grandkids, golf, play pickleball, entertain friends, and more. You didn’t plan on chronic muscular pain, surgeries, pills, and physical therapy, just so you can get through your day to try to enjoy these things.

Therapeutic massage is the manual manipulation of the body’s soft tissue for the reduction of stress and pain, the treatment of muscle problems and injuries, and the enhancement of the body’s natural restorative functioning. It can be applied using various parts of the body or mechanical aids. It may also have benefits for mental and emotional well-being.

Here is a compilation of various therapeutic modalities that may be beneficial. The following are my personal interpretations and applications of these methods, which may differ due to varying educational backgrounds and perspectives.

Swedish: This is a very common massage. It is essentially light to firm pressure. It’s great if you just need to relax and unwind. You can request a deeper pressure but not a deep tissue massage.

Deep Tissue: Deep tissue is used to release fascia and realign muscle fibers and can be helpful if you have generalized tight muscles or knots. It works through layers and is slow. This is not an appropriate modality if you have injuries or more complex issues.

Shiatsu: This type of massage is generally performed fully clothed. This type of massage works your whole body through stretches, vibration, breath work, and point work. It’s great for relaxing, stimulates the healing response, and creates balance.

Myofascial Therapy (MFT): MFT is used for muscular imbalances in the body. This is more technical and detailed work. This helps with range of motion issues, soft tissue injury, or postural issues. Trigger point release is a common technique used with MFT.

Craniosacral: This modality is amazing for anxiety, vertigo, migraines, trauma, and stress release. It consists of various holds that work with your breath and body to bring greater release and nervous system shift.

These are just a few types of massage and their benefits. Not all modalities might be right for you, but it may be beneficial for you to try them out and see what works for you. Remember, you may feel some relief the first time, but massage is not a magic pill. We are working with your organic body to heal over time. Patience and knowledge will help you get the maximum benefit from bodywork.
