The Rancheros Square Dance Club offered a demonstration of their square dancing at the “Women of Wine” group on Sept. 19. Many don’t really know what today’s square dancing is all about. We dance to all genres of music and attire at most dances is casual. If you can walk, you can square dance, because our professional live caller tells you what moves to make every step of the way!

Would you like to come and give this fun activity a try for yourself? The Rancheros Square Dance Club is starting a new set of lessons on Thursday, Oct. 10. There will be an opportunity to give the activity a try for free that evening, starting at 6:30 p.m. Square dancing is a fun activity that incorporates both mental and physical activity and lots of time to socialize! So get up off the couch, grab a friend, and come enjoy square dancing!

Lessons will be focused on completing the initial 50 calls, the first part of the Mainstream list, by the end of December, and completion of the remainder of the Mainstream list by the end of January. Some clubs in the local area dance at the Mainstream level.

After this initial set of calls, the lessons move on to a slightly more advanced level known as PLUS. This is the level danced by the club. Those lessons typically start in early February and are planned to be completed by early April.

Once they have graduated from PLUS, those participating can dance with the club and also nearly everywhere in the U.S. and around the world. The prior year a group went from here to Germany to tour and dance with local clubs there, and one Ranchero has square danced in Japan several times. Rancheros also danced at the National Square Dance Convention held in Milwaukee this past June.

If you are interested in attending the free square dance lesson, please RSVP to Kim Denny at [email protected] or Rebecca Williams at [email protected]. That way we can ensure we have enough experienced dancers there to help you. Having experienced dancers to help the new dancers is a key part of our lesson program so you can be assured of plenty of help along the way as you learn this fun new activity.
