Clothing from Kids’ Closet Helps Boost Students’ Self Esteem
Nancy McCluskey-Moore
Twice a year, in the fall and spring, SaddleBrooke Community Outreach’s Kids’ Closet provides school wardrobes to children from pre-school through 8th grade living in towns along a 100+ mile corridor from Catalina north to Miami and San Carlos. By offering new clothing and shoes, this program helps to raise students’ self-respect while reducing the strain on their families’ limited budgets. And every student delights in being able to choose what they wear.
Kids’ Closet is located in “the big red building” in Mammoth. Students are brought to the facility on school buses on Mondays and Thursdays or on Saturdays by their parents. Inside, there is a waiting area where each child can select two grade-appropriate books to take home. In the shopping and fitting area, volunteers serve as personal shoppers, helping each child find clothing that fits. But the children make their own selections from the t-shirts, shorts or jeans, jackets or sweatshirts, and shoes in stock. Students also receive underwear, socks, and personal toiletry items, such as toothbrushes and toothpaste. Dressing rooms and bins of clothing organized by size help to recreate the experience of shopping in a store.
During the 2025-26 school year, Kids’ Closet clothed 1,495 students in the fall and 1,514 students in the spring. In addition to clothing, 1,372 backpacks filled with grade-appropriate school supplies were delivered to students in kindergarten through 6th grade.
We are already gearing up for the Kids’ Closet’s fall session for the 2026-27 school year. Shipments of clothing, shoes, and books are arriving and soon the warehouse bins will be full. But the engine that makes this program run is our volunteers. Our fall session is tentatively scheduled to begin on Sept. 10. If you would like to become a Kids’ Closet volunteer, please send an email to Margaret Thompson at thompson7767@yahoo.com.

During a Teen Closet shopping trip, this brother and sister duo found lots of clothing, backpacks, and other items to prepare them for the next school semester.
Volunteers Needed to Help Teens Shop for School Clothing
Vivian Errico
Twice a year SaddleBrooke Community Outreach (SBCO) hosts an all-expenses paid Teen Closet shopping spree at the local Target and Ross stores. Teen Closet helps students in grades 9 through 12 look their best and helps their families deal with the rising cost of new school clothing.
Students entering ninth grade are identified by their schools as those who would benefit from the program based on family need. Prior to entering ninth grade, these students would have been able to attend SBCO’s Kids’ Closet. To stay in the program, Teen Closet students must work hard in their studies, participate in sports and extracurricular activities, and complete six hours of community service each semester.
For the coming fall school semester, teens are invited to shop with SBCO from July 20 through July 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. on weekdays and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. We need volunteers, both male and female, to accompany these deserving students as they shop for school clothes. If you have two hours to spare during these shopping dates and times, please contact either Vivian@community-outreach.org or Debbie@community-outreach.org. You may also call our office weekdays between 9 a.m. and noon at 520-825-3302 for further information.
