The SaddleBrooke Ranch Women’s Golf Association hosted its third annual Sadie Hawkins Golf Tournament on Tuesday, September 20, 2016, with 48 golfers participating. This event is inspired by an American folk event and pseudo-holiday originated by Al Capp’s classic hillbilly comic strip Li’l Abner (1934–1978). This inspired real-world Sadie Hawkins events, the premise of which is that females ask males for a date or dancing. At SaddleBrooke Ranch the SBRWGA ladies invited a male resident from the Ranch (not their spouse) with a USGA handicap to participate in the two-person best ball format with a cowboy/cowgirl theme.
Fun surprises for the male invitees were on holes 4, 10 and 13. The forward tees were painted pink, and the men were allowed to tee off on these forward tees. While on the golf course a tuxedo wearing Marshal tended as the “butt-ler” handing out cold drinks and treats. The Marshal, Mick Anna, also provided much needed comic relief as the golfers strived to win the event for bragging rights and cash prizes. Following the event, golfers gathered for a luncheon, presentation of awards and door prizes.
