Glasshoppers Hop Into Fall

Claudia Knauss

When I first came to Saddlebrook Ranch (SBR) and began searching for a club to join, everyone I asked for recommendations said, “Try Glasshoppers first!” “Why?” “Because everyone there seems to be having so much fun!” Soon after, I experienced the fun firsthand, and I continue to marvel at the warmth and enthusiasm volunteer assistants demonstrate to members of all skill levels. As someone who has never been considered crafty, I’ve surprised family, friends, and myself. You’ll never find a more encouraging group!

In September, “Hoppers” participated in a unique field trip to Sonoran Glass School, a nonprofit, public-access educational organization dedicated to inspiring people of all ages to discover the wonder of glass art. SBR residents enjoyed an opportunity to blow their own glass pumpkins in celebration of fall. Hoppers received personalized attention from Sonoran’s Hot Shop instructors, and were able to work at their own pace or get however much help they preferred. In addition to creating beautiful glass art, monies raised at Sonoran School go toward teaching underprivileged students through camps and classes. Members finished their amazing day by catching a light dinner together at BJ’s, and picked up their pumpkin creations after they’d cooled down a few days later.

Each year Glasshoppers celebrate “Christmas In July” by creating holiday décor and gifts for family and friends. They enjoy working while listening to Christmas tunes and entering holiday trivia contests. Glasshoppers are now looking forward to projects celebrating autumn, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. You are always invited to check out the glass cases right outside the studio door, where members display and offer their glassworks for sale all year long.

Each month, a variety of glass classes are offered. Members receive instruction and materials, while enhancing their skills and sharing creative time with others. On the first weekend in November, the glass studio will be filled with a huge variety of glass pieces during the SBR ARTwalk. All displayed pieces will be available for purchase.

SBR’s glass studio in the Creative Arts Building is open six days a week, and members can come in and work on projects of their own choosing. Cheerful assistance is offered during both morning and afternoon open studio time. Cost to members is only $1 per session. A wide variety of colored glass and embellishments are always available for purchase, enabling members to design and complete projects without having to look elsewhere for materials.
