Mosaic Stepping Stone Class March 29 and April 1

Dale Farland

Would you like to create your very own mosaic stepping stone? Mosaic stepping stones are a great addition to any garden. In the class, you will create a 12-inch stepping stone, using tile, broken ceramics, and glass gems to create a colorful and fun addition to your garden. You will learn about the different materials that can go outside, the adhesives that are used, and the techniques and tricks to create a long-lasting outdoor mosaic. Once you have made this first stepping stone, you may want to create more for your garden. You will receive a resource list to make more stones.

This two-session class is being taught by Gillian Allard, who also taught the Fun, Funky Tapestry Mosaic Magnets class. Gillian Allard is an artist from the Southern Arizona Arts Guild (SAAG). If you shop at the SAAG store in La Encantada, you may have seen her artwork of tapestry mirrors and panels.

Class description: Skills you will learn include tricks to breaking plates and other household ceramic items, breaking high fire ceramics, and how to deal with mosaic materials of different heights (this might be an opportunity to take out your aggressions!).

Session 1 involves designing the mosaic and adhering the mosaic to the base. In session 2, you will grout and complete the project. Session 1, on March 29, will take 4 hours. Session 2 on April 1 will be 1 ½ to 2 hours. After these two classes, you will take home a personal garden stepping stone.
