At our October meeting John and Lola Hess will take us along on their trip exploring South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and Arizona.
They visited Mount Rushmore National Memorial and the Badlands, Glacier, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Bryce Canyon, and Zion National Parks. They will also take us to Page, Ariz., to explore the incredible slot canyons of both Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon, located on the Navajo Nation property near the Arizona/Utah border. Slot canyons form when the sandstone rock at the surface erodes, causing an opening which allows flash flood water to flow down. The terrific force of the water erodes the rock below. Over millennia, the force of the water carves the very colorful, curving rocks of the narrow, steep-walled gorge below the surface. The light that shines down from the surface crack above reveals gorgeous colors on the canyon walls. Antelope Canyon is a delight for both photographers and geology buffs.
We’ll also be treated to see and hear about the Petrified Forest in Holbrook, Ariz., and the Painted Desert.
They have a lot to share and we hope you’ll join us for this presentation. So mark your calendar and join Travel Talk Tuesday on Oct. 28 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the La Mesa Room.
We also look forward to your joining us for future presentations to Galapagos, Southern Africa (Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa), Nepal, China Tibet, Japan, and more. We’ll be taking a break during November and December 2025, but watch for our announcements of presentations planned for 2026.
