Rotary supports speaking skills

Tim Morsani

Every year Rotary clubs around the country sponsor speech contests for middle school and high school students. The subject is Rotary’s Four-Way Test of the things we think, say, and do: 1. Is it the truth? 2. Is it fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build good will and better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Students usually draw on personal experiences with friends and family to elaborate on the subject and structure their arguments. The students gain valuable experience researching and understanding their subject as well as speaking before an audience. Rotarians get to connect directly with their communities and have an impact on young people’s values.
