SBR Woodworkers Club assemble bookcases for the book shelf reading program

Do you remember the first book you got as a child? That special feeling knowing you could read it over and over again and not have to give it back to the library? Such a book is even more special to a child in a family where purchasing a book would be a luxury they could not afford. That is what makes it so exciting for SaddleBrooke Community Outreach (SBCO) to provide books to the children in first through third grades at Ray Elementary School in Kearny each year. This amounts to 12-24 books over the course of the three years.

In addition, to encourage the thrill of reading and collecting books, each child is provided with their own bookcase. This year, the bookcases are being handcrafted by the experienced hands of the SaddleBrooke Ranch Woodworkers Group. The group is comprised of approximately six members and within the limited time frame of a few months, they will complete 35 two-shelf bookcases for the students to receive with their book.

It is well documented that the more a child reads, the more successful they are in school. The dollars you donate to SBCO go to programs like this and others to help the children in these underserved areas to succeed. SBCO is a 501(c)(3) charity, so your donations are tax deductible.
